Graphene Coatings

What are they?

Graphene coatings are be applied to the topcoat of your vehicle to add a clear protective layer for your vehicles paintwork. It is mainly used to protect the  exterior surfaces such as paint, rubber, plastics and glass. Their durability can last up to 9 years and longer (depending on the coating and maintenance of the vehicle).

Graphene coatings are highly flexible and offer maximal resistance against harsh environmental influences or contamination such as acid water, rain, dirt and other fallouts that normally would latch onto your paintwork. Graphene can withstand and also reduce extreme heat. These benefits along with it’s high water contact angle (125°), a measure of ‘wettability’ of a solid, reduces the likelihood of water spots appearing. This is because water-spotting occurs when moisture, like rainwater, rests and is left to dry on the hot surface.

What are Graphene Coatings made of?

The ingredients

To make it clear from the start: Graphene coatings are not a one atom thick layer of graphene, it is reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in a polymer coating, which we generally refer to as ceramic or glass coating in this industry.

Simply put, graphene coatings are a liquid polymer sealants with the added ingredient of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO).  It is the addition of rGO that assists with reducing etchings, water spotting, staining and reinforces the polymetric structure or matrixes which results in a stronger and tougher coating. And because the weight of rGO is so light in comparison to volume, the ratio or percentage of rGO content in a coating may seem miniscule when compared using weight but is more than sufficient to perform its’ intended purposes.

What can Graphene Coatings do?

Real world benefits

Graphene coatings are specifically known to add deep shine and a durable strong layer of protection to your car’s exterior paintwork designed to resist the harsh Australian sun, harsh chemicals, insane water repellency, environmental fallout and more with the added benefit of making your vehicle easier to clean and maintain.

Let’s break down these Graphene Coating protective properties further:

UV Damage / Oxidization Protection

The sun’s ultraviolet rays have the power to oxidize the paint of your vehicle, which will result in your car looking dull or even faded.

Graphene coatings are designed to protect the paintwork from those damaging influences due to its UV protection properties. Hence, your car’s paintwork is shielded from the Australian sun and stays in great shape!

Chemical Stains and Etching Protection

Your car may be chemically stained from naturally acidic contaminants, such as bird poo, tree sap and other. Graphene Coatings buy you time to remove those contaminants as the coating surface makes it much harder for those contaminants to contaminate or stick to your car’s paintwork.

If these stains or etchings are not removed within a reasonable amount of time, they can also start to etch into your coating. In such a situation, the Graphene Coating acts as a sacrificial layer that can be removed along with the etching and then the coating can be reapplied. This situation is much better than the bird poo or other contaminant etching your cars clear coat directly, which may, unfortunately, require a full respray to repair correctly.

Ease of Cleaning

Due to the graphene coating benefit of being hydrophobic (water-repellent), water will simply bead off the surface and slide off, making it so much easier to wash and dry. Consequently, dirt and grime won’t be able to bond to the car’s paintwork which makes the maintenance of your vehicle less frequent as the car stays cleaner for longer.

Graphene coatings are thought to increase gloss, yet in-fact graphene coatings have a darkening effect which increases the vibrancy of the paintworks appearance.

What Graphene Coatings don't do

Myths and Legends

Although graphene coatings come with so many benefits, there are still many misconceptions about them. It is important to know that these benefits don’t mean you have a bulletproof shield around your car so that you can abuse it or not maintain it at all, but it means your car is better protected.

Let’s clear up some of those misconceptions:

Its a one-atom thick layer of graphene protecting your vehicle

As mentioned previously, graphene coatings are not a one atom thick layer of graphene, it is reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in a polymer coating, which we generally refer to as ceramic or glass coating in this industry that has added benefits when it comes to water-spotting and heat dissipation and vibrancy/darkening of paintwork.

Eliminate the Danger of Scratches, Swirl Marks, or Rock Chips

It is true, some scratches can be repelled by a graphene coating, however, it won’t be able to protect your vehicle from the risk of rock chips or other deeper and more aggressive scratches. Also, it would need to be maintained properly as abrasive car washing techniques or automated car wash machines will instil swirl marks on your vehicle’s surface.

Eliminate the Risk of Water Spotting

Water contains dirt and minerals which are left behind when water evaporates on your vehicle’s surface creating those visible water spots. Although water slides off easier with a graphene coating, some beaded water spots will remain on the surface of the vehicle and if not removed within a reasonable amount of time, they will create water spot stains on the paintwork. These though can be removed with specific coating safe products.

Eliminate the Need to Wash

Yes, graphene coatings give your car a showroom finish look. Yes, it stays cleaner for longer. But it still needs to be maintained. Even with a graphene coating, you will still need to wash your car regularly to maintain its look. However, the maintenance will be a much easier and a much quicker process as you no longer need to wax or polish the paintwork. This means less work and better results.

Are all Graphene Coatings the same?

The Differences

The short answer is No. They are not all the same and differ in quality and its protective properties. In this case, the general rule of “you get what you pay for” can be your guide.

Professional Grade Graphene Coatings

Cost: $900 – $4,000

A professional-grade graphene coating product must be applied by a skilled and certified professional such as the staff at A Buff & Beyond which are accredited and certified installers for Gtechniq, Artdeshine, Titan and Drexler coatings. The application of a coating needs to happen in a controlled environment with the right tools. These coatings are ultra-high-end sealants which are difficult to apply and can cause damage to the car’s paintwork if applied incorrectly. But it’s these professional-grade coatings that are much more durable and exhibit unmatched quality and performance.

A Buff & Beyond only use professional-grade graphene coatings that require accreditation to use. We do not use cheap graphene coatings that only last a few months or a year at best. All our coatings come with manufacturer warranties and have been tested. Manufacturers we use and recommend are the likes of Gtechniq and Artdeshine.

Additionally, it is good to know that the majority of cars need to undergo paint correction before the application of a graphene coating as a major influence in the durability of the coating is based on the preparation of the vehicles paintwork. Graphene coatings lock in the condition of your car’s paintwork and enhance the beauty underneath. Hence, you want to make sure that your paintwork is at its best before applying the coating. Although paint correction is a time consuming, skilful and costly task, it should not be skipped and should only be undertaken by a professional as the risk of damaging the original paintwork is significantly high (and the cost of a respray even higher).

A paint correction involves removing defects in the paint by using different polishing methods. There are many small steps involved in getting the paint in its best shape but its’ worth the effort. Don’t be tempted to leave out this process as you might end up highlighting all the defects in your vehicles paintwork otherwise!

Graphene Coating Maintenance

Maximise performance and longevity

To maintain your coating is not as difficult as you might think. Only some basic ingredients are needed: PH neutral car shampoo which does not contain any waxes or sealants, a mitt and two buckets.

You want to hand wash the vehicle regularly by using the two-bucket technique. You may also want to apply a high-quality graphene boost spray now and then after your wash as it will extend the longevity of that graphene coating and adds additional depth and vibrancy to the vehicles paintwork.

However, if you are pressed on time, then feel free to give us a call and inquire about our maintenance service. At A Buff & Beyond we want your vehicle to stay in its top shape, so we created a service that allows us to come to you to maintain the vehicle so that you don’t have to.

Are Graphene Coatings worth it?

Yes, it definitely is worth it. A Graphene coating will always add value and benefit to your car. Although it is not a miracle worker, it offers great protective properties as well as hydrophobic/water-repellent benefits. This additional glass-like layer adds deep vibrancy and shine while it prevents UV rays, dirt and grime, contaminants, extreme heat, and swirl marks from eating into your car’s paintwork. Additionally, it will be so much easier to clean and maintain your vehicle to its showroom finish. With a coating, your car’s paintwork will be protected for years to come.

It is strongly recommended to get the coating applied by an authorized installer who will be able to ensure that your vehicle has been coated correctly and your car has the protection it deserves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regarding Graphene Coatings

The purest form of Graphene is indeed expensive, especially when making into a one atom thick layer structure. However, we utilise reduced Graphene Oxide, which is much more economical to be functionalised and complement our coatings.

No. Contrary to popular assumptions, our product is dominantly a silicone polymer coating whereby reduced Graphene Oxide is suspended in the polymer matrix when cured. However, professional-grade coatings are designed to last and protect your vehicles paintwork for 2-9 years and longer if maintained correctly.
However, if your vehicle is polished after the coating has been applied, this process may remove the coating entirely.

While pure Graphene, in a one-atom thick layer is a very powerful material, this is still not feasible to be made for surface protection. With rGO in a polymeric matrix, the anti-corrosion properties is very effective to fight off etching, water-spots and stains. The use of rGO with a polymer also creates a composite material that is tougher and stronger, this translates into durability. A suitable metaphor would be how steel is made, less than 1% of carbon alloyed into iron.

Both the terms “Ceramic Coating” and “Graphene Coating” are only names for identification and simple recognition. In fact, most of the coating products in the market are made from silicone polymers. Ceramic Coatings are named because of the addition of Silicone Dioxide (SiO2, the major composition of sand, glass, quartz) in a silicone polymer coating while Graphene Coatings are named due to the use of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO). In the case of Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating, both SiO2 and rGO are used.

The term “Ceramic Coating” have become synonymous with a very hard and tough coating due to the fact that most manufacturers prefer to cure them into a glass-like material that is hard, transparent and reflective. However many do not know that these “Ceramic Coating” can also be cured into softer more flexible materials. For ease of identification’s sake, many prefer to associate hard and tough coatings as “Ceramic Coating”. Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating cures into a softer and more flexible material due to the type of silicone polymers and curing agents used.

To simply put it, soft or hard, brittle or flexible, thin or thick, a coating’s ability to resist abrasion and scratches is not dependent on the hardness, toughness or thickness. Any product applied by hand to a surface is too thin to exhibit any real scratch resistance (9H rated coatings or otherwise). The real reason why a treated surface is able to reduce chances of scratching is due to the lack of friction, or sleekness.

9H is the grade of pencil tip used to scratch a surface to measure abrasion resistance while hardness is measured using the MOHS Scale. Some brands or manufacturers use the words “9H Hardness” that carries no meaning.

While many coatings are made with materials that resist a 9H abrasion test or are made to be
hard like glass/quartz rated 5-7 on the MOH Scale, Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating as a
cured material is only able to resist up to 7H scratch test.

No. rGO used in our products is not functionalised to exhibit that property.

No. The hardness comes from the silicone polymer material while abrasion resistance comes
from the lack of friction due to the sleekness our products exhibits.

No. Sleekness is made possible from using a variant of Polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), a type
of silicone polymer.

No. These properties are entirely dependent on the polymers used. In “Ceramic Coatings”
that are cured to be hard and transparent, these usually look like optically transparent glass,
which gives reflectivity (shine) and gloss.
Coatings (Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating) that are cured to be softer are usually slightly
cloudy though when applied onto a surface is still optically clear, these will darken and
saturate (vibrant) colours.

All our Car detailing Packages include a car paint correction process which permanently removes paint defects and restores gloss and shine to your vehicles paintwork. Once the paint correction process is complete, the shine is locked in with a high-gloss professional grade paint protection coating which will last for years to come. We are accredited installers of both ceramic coatings and graphene coatings.

I normally do not like to review any businesses but I think I need to for this one, because I did owe previous reviews that made me make decision to contact Fouad. Even tho I am living 150kms from his business workshop. All car lovers if you are thinking of minor paint corrections and paint coating. You would be thinking which types would suit you best, price would come into consideration as well. And for sure we all would love to get the best product and services with the cheapest price. I am the same. The price for Ceramic or Graphene coating is surely much higher than normal waxing. But im thinking of timing to do the coating and the durability of these products per days. Ceramic/Graphene is clearly a better choice for me. Why doing it with the buff and beyond? Please ask Fouad about products he uses and how he would treat your car and compare with other quotes you have before making your decision. It’s like everything. Quality and service versus price. If you love your car and take pride of it. No better place to do car coating than with him. From the start. Quoting was quick it came with explanation of each types of product. Made it easy to choose what suited you most. Scheduling was easy, actually booking my car into service with the Porsche took longer. So all work out well. His workshop is super clean and professional . Everything was delivered on time as promised no delay. The result is amazing. Like I did a new paint on my car. And also coating on windscreen was a cherry on the cake. No more dirty water marks. Communicate with Fouad was easy and professional. Every questions were answered with patient and willingness to make you understand. He is a gentleman absolute pleasure to deal with. Hope my review would help anyone who is thinking of doing coating and thank you Fouad for your amazing job 🙏

A Buff & Beyond done an amazing job on my 24 year old black Toyota Starlet GT Turbo this week. The car had a dodgy respray done at some point in its life and the paint work was far from perfect. To add to this, the roof was very badly sun damaged, with white blotches all over it. I brought the car to Fouad for an initial consultation and after taking some paint thickness measurements, he was confident that he could get the roof back to black and tidy up the majority of the rest of the body. We agreed that the silver package was the way forward for this car. I could not be happier with the outcome! The roof is as close to perfect as could be achieved, as are all of the other panels given the age of the car & the previous botched paint job. He was so careful around some of the existing paint defects to ensure no further damage occurred. Fouad takes great pride in his work and the proof is undoubtedly in the outcome! Highly recommend the work that this company do & I will certainly be back with other vehicles. Thanks Fouad & team.

A Buff & Beyond is the place to take you car in no matter of the size, to get it professionally coated it at the most efficient time. I have taken my Ford Ranger in for a Bronze pack to get it coated as the car was completely new. The car was already nice and shiny but seeing it after it has been coated, it has completely transferred the look, where the colour has started to pop more and it also became very smooth and even more shiny. Fouad knows what he is doing and you can trust him with your car. Fouad has an exceptional customer service where he would point out any defects on the paint and explain to you what exactly needs to be done to have it treated well. Fouad did a really good job with my car and I couldn’t be happier with the results - definitely recommend A Buff & Beyond!!!

Words can’t describe how happy I was with the Service provided by Fouad and the Quality and finish of the product used. I am an old school spray painter by trade and have never liked any products added over the paint to my cars. When I bought my last Audi I was convinced by Audi that I needed a Ceramic coating and in the first 2 weeks it was apparent that it was a total waste of 2k. I just had my Pride and joy Ford Ranger resprayed and didn’t want it coated but after hours of discussion on all the pros by Fouad I agreed to have it done. I can now say that the ceramic coating applied to my car by B&B after 7 weeks is absolutely amazing. In the 2nd week I parked under a tree that gave out a mist of tree sap all over the bonnet and the side of the car. I was so stressed and upset that I walked away. The next day it rained so again left it alone. When it finally cleared up to my surprise the tree sap had all washed off. I can confirm 100% that from now on every car I own will have this product applied by who I now call Car Dr Fouad. The Audi is booked in to strip the old coating applied by Audi and have a new coat applied by B&B.

Car Detailing Information

We understand there is a lot of information out there about car detailing, paint correction,  graphene and ceramic coatings. It can be overwhelming and frustrating at times to go through all that information only to be more confused and have more questions than when you first started. That’s why we have written these accurate, comprehensive yet simple to understand articles regarding paint protection, paint correction, graphene coatings and ceramic coatings – so that you can be informed to make the right decision for your car.

CAR Paint Correction - Let us bring back the shine and the smiles

Thanks to years of extensive testing and research at A Buff & Beyond, we have refined our car paint correction methods to be effective and safe on all types of clear coats.

Paint correction by machines, despite how complicated some websites and videos will attempt to make it look, is really just ‘sanding’. The difference is in the skill, patience and understanding behind diminishing and non-diminishing compounds, pressures, machine speeds, backing plate angles, heat and temperatures, surface areas, residue control, paint thickness, tooling and more – a balancing act that becomes an art with experience.
