With graphene coatings gaining popularity, there unfortunately is a lot of misinformation on social media and websites regarding what graphene coatings are and their benefits.
To make it clear from the start: Graphene coatings are not a one atom thick layer of graphene wrapping your vehicle’s paintwork. Simply put, graphene coatings are ceramic coatings with graphene particles dispersed in them. The coating is then applied to the topcoat of your vehicle to add a clear protective layer for your vehicles paintwork.
This technology is nothing new. Over the years, many other elements such as titanium, zinc and even diamonds have been added to ceramic coatings to enhance certain parts of a ceramic coating performance. But they are not called ‘titanium coatings’ or ‘diamond coatings’. They are still ceramic coatings.
While pure Graphene, in a one-atom thick layer form is a very powerful material, this is still not feasible to be made for surface protection.
Likewise, the performance and durability of the graphene coating is really based and dependant on the quality of the ceramic coating it is dispersed in, as the ratio or percentage of reduced graphene oxide (rGO) content in a ceramic coating is miniscule.
Are graphene coatings worth it?
Graphene’s future application in many industries looks promising. But currently, in the field of paint protection, it has a long way to go. If you are in the market for a paint protection coating, it would be more beneficial to invest in a tried and true ceramic coating like Modesta which can offer your unmatched performance and durability.
Modesta is the most exclusive automotive paint protection product line that is currently available on the market. Each bottle is made by hand by professional chemists in Kagawa, Japan with the greatest passion and care. Worldwide they are known for the most advanced technology of paint protection and respected for their outstanding quality and customer care.
Graphene coating questions - answered
The purest form of Graphene is indeed expensive. That is why it is important to note that graphene coatings do not contain graphene in its purest form, instead manufactureres utilise reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO), which is much more economical.
No. Contrary to popular assumptions, graphene coatings are dominantly a silicone polymer coating whereby reduced Graphene Oxide is suspended in the polymer matrix when cured.
No. As previously mentioned, graphene coatings are simply ceramic coatings with reduced graphene oxide dispersed in them. It is the quality of the ceramic coating that dictates the performance and durability of the coating.
9H or 10H is the grade of pencil tip used to scratch a surface to measure abrasion resistance, while hardness is measured using the MOHS Scale. Some brands or manufacturers use the words “9H hardness” or even “10H hardness”, but it literally carries no meaning and can be a misleading marketing tool.
No. rGO used in graphene coatings is not functionalised to exhibit that property.
No. The hardness comes from the silicone polymer material while abrasion resistance comes from the lack of friction due to the sleekness our products exhibits.
No. Sleekness is a result of the silicone polymer being used, not the reduced graphene oxide.
No. These properties are entirely dependent on the polymers used. In “Ceramic Coatings” that are cured to be hard and transparent, these usually look like optically transparent glass, which gives reflectivity (shine) and gloss. This is actually a trademark feature of Modesta coatings.
Graphene coatings are cured to be softer and are usually slightly cloudy in appearance.
Why choose modesta ceramic coating?
Modesta is the most exclusive automotive paint protection product line that is currently available on the market. Each bottle is made by hand by professional chemists in Kagawa, Japan with the greatest passion and care.
Worldwide they are known for the most advanced technology of paint protection and respected for their outstanding quality and customer care. Modesta’s products have been developed by leading Japanese scientists and are only available to our hand-selected detailing specialists through our worldwide distributor network.
A literal and measurable liquid glass ceramic coating is installed on your vehicles paintwork to form a clear and hard glass layer that bonds to your paint for up to 10 years, protecting your vehicle from dirt, heat, watermarks, oxidation, etchings and light scratches. Your vehicle also will be easier to keep clean whilst maintaining a ‘candy-like’ gloss appearance.
Modesta coatings are also the hardest to apply. Which is why there are only a few hand picked and trained Modesta installers in Australia.
Modesta manufacture coatings to protect your cars paintwork, wheels, calipers, glass, plastic, and leather surfaces.
