Car Paint Protection
Paint Protection is a transparent coating that is applied over the car’s paintwork to protect the paint from damage caused by the sunlight, chemicals, light scratches and more whilst also having the added benefit of keeping your car looking cleaner for much longer and making it much easier to clean thanks to its hydrophobic/water repellant properties. The most durable forms of paint protection are Ceramic Coatings and Graphene Coatings.
But
Why would this be needed? Is the topcoat not already designed to protect the vehicle’s colour and shine?
Yes, that is true, but…
Does my car need paint protection?
Paint Protection is specifically designed to protect the clear coat and base colour of your car from the constant expsoure of the sun, chemicals, bird poo and more by adding the extra layer of protection. The top coat of your car is very thin (about 0.076mm thin!) and new cars are even less! Without this added layer of protection, all those environmental contaminations would be directly damaging and wearing into your paint or clear coat rather than attacking that protective layer designed to take the hits. It is also noteworthy that with each wash, you will unavoidably introduce ever so small scratches and swirl marks to the top coat which will leave the paint gradually looking dull and aged.
In summary, the benefits of paint protection are:
- UV protection to prevent paint fade and failure
- Water spot etching reduction
- Industrial fallout repellency
- Protection lasts years without needing frequent reapplication
- Increased hardness for minor scratch and swirl mark resistance
- Increase in shine and gloss
- Insane waterrepellancy / hyphobic properties
- Self cleaning properties making it cleaner for longer
- Quicker and easier to wash and maintain
- Sacrificial layer against etchings and other damage
- A fraction of the cost in comparision to a respray of the paintwork when it fails
These benefits don’t mean you have a bulletproof shield around your car so that you can abuse it or not maintain it at all, but it means your car is better protected. Some paint protection products will need to be reapplied after 3 years, others after many more – this depends on the life of the vehicle as in Australia harsh conditions are just about anywhere the sun shines as the high levels of UV light does huge damage to modern paint products.
Different types of Paint Protection
Both the terms “Ceramic Coating” and “Graphene Coating” are only names for identification and simple recognition. In fact, most of the coating products in the market are made from silicone polymers. Ceramic Coatings are named because of the addition of Silicone Dioxide (SiO2, the major composition of sand, glass, quartz) in a silicone polymer coating while Graphene Coatings are named due to the use of reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO). In the case of Artdeshine Nano Graphene Coating, both SiO2 and rGO are used.
Ceramic Coatings
Ceramic Coatings are primarily silica-based products that create a hard, glass-like coating on top of the existing clear coat which adds a protective layer, depth and gloss. This additional layer is hydrophobic (water-repellent) which is also resilient to UV, chemicals, contaminants such as bird droppings and extreme heat (great for Australia!). It repels dust and dirt and helps to prevent minor scratches, swirls and other unwanted marks.

Pros
- Lasts a minimum of 2-3 years – can be longer when correctly maintained
- Strong protection against: dirt, dust and grime, UV, water, heat and chemicals
- Helps to slow down environmental damage such as oxidation and rusting
- Prevents minor damage like scratches, swirls and marring
- Gives depth and gloss to the paintwork
- Easier to clean and maintain
Graphene Coatings
Graphene Coatings are a polymer-based product (as most of the Ceramic Coatings are) which has added reduced Graphene Oxide (rGO) in it due to its protection properties.
Hence it provides the same benefits as ceramic coating with added protection properties due to the fact that is also contains rGO. The addition will assist with reducing etching, spotting, staining and reinforces the polymetric structure or matrixes which results in a stronger and toucher coating.
Its high flexibility means that Graphene Coatings will cover the entire vehicle and bond with the applied surfaces cohesively for superior all-round protection. Maximal resistance against harsh weather conditions and contamination due to its super-hydrophobic properties means water, rain, dirt, dust and other environemtal fallout have a harder time latching to the paintwork, almost acting as a repellent. Also, thanks to its advanced thermal regulation, it provides excelled defensive properties over ceramic coatings in the Australian climate.
Pros
- Lasts a minimum of 5 years
- Strong protection against: dirt, dust and grime, UV, water, heat and chemicals
- Easier to clean and maintain
- Prevents minor damage like scratches, swirls and marring
- Gives depth and gloss to the paintwork
- Less prone to water spotting
- Easier application process
- Reduction in heat absorption on treated surfaces
- Longer durability
Before we get started
The paintwork of your vehicle should be in ‘top’ condition before locking it in with your chosen form of protection – especially when the car will be coated with ceramic or graphene coating. This means, your car should be thoroughly inspected and may need to undergo paint correction before the application.
Before we at A Buff & Beyond apply any paint protection to the vehicles paintwork, we carry out a detailed paint inspection with you either in person or over a video call where we will inform you of any paint defects found in the paintwork and may recommend the removal of these unsightly defects before the application of a paint protection coating. Find our paint correction and paint protection service packages here for more information.
Conclusion
It is often said: Prevention is better than cure.
And this might be the case for you with the investment of paint protection. It really depends on how you view it.
As previously mentioned, the cost to respray a car’s paintwork or fix small imperfections is very expensive – much more than adding a layer of protection which has the added benefits of making it easier to maintain, clean and makes your car looks glossy.

Paint correction by machines, despite how complicated some websites and videos will attempt to make it look, is really just ‘sanding’.
